during WWII, jap was one of many terms used in a derogitory manner to describe people of japanese origin. although i and many others understand that you are not trying to be derogitory or rude, it is still considered offensive by many. even though "spic" may just be a shortened version of "hispanic", it also carries with it much more through connotation.
